“When the rain is falling on the soil in the wine district of Paarl it shines like a pearl”
Our history dates back to 1791, when German immigrant Philippus Wolvaart acquired 49 hectares of land in the Paarl Valley. He named his property Nederburgh, in honour of the VOC commissioner, Sebastian Cornelis Nederburgh. Later, the ‘h’ was dropped from the spelling of the farm’s name and it became Nederburg as it is known today. Embraced through the Drakenstein Mountains, this famous Manor house was bought in that time for 600 guilders!!
Since that day the star of Nederberg is shining. Nowadays they sources the grapes all over the Western Cape and sell there wines in 80 different countries. More than 50 percent however is sold in south africa and yearly they host over 30.000 visitors on the Estate. Nederburg has again been recognised as one of the world’s 50 most admired wine brands by Drinks International. This is the sixth time the winery has made the prestigious list, joining iconic names such as Antinori in Italy, Concha y Toro in Chile, and Penfolds in Australia. Also in the Netherlands the wines of Nederburg are very popular. During a nice wine tasting presented over a lunch in restaurant Flora Batava in Nieuwersluis, Winemaker Samuel Viljoen explains the infuence of the three main south african soil types which are divided over 30 diverse wine districts and 98 smaller wards.
